e Xposure 1.0 - March 2003 |
By Larry R. Lubenow
PAINT MAY GREEN – Several jewelers across the nation have taken us up on our offer to “Pain May Green” with emeralds and cash. The paint brush we offered was the Empress Caroline Exhibition, the splendid 858-karat rough cut North Carolina emerald – the largest ever found in North America.
If you’re interested, there are a couple of weeks left in May, whose birthstone as every woman knows, is emerald. There are excellent dates open for the rest of the year as well.
If you – or peers – want more information on Big Green, let us know at larry@lubenow.com or 512-335-9233/

SPECIAL EVENTS & INSTORE Magazine – After reporting the success of Ilya Abelsky and Arthur Gordon’s Fine Jewelry in Oklahoma City in last month’s newsletter, we were invited to be part of that magazine’s look at Special Events & what makes them successful. We, of course, honored editor Paul Holewa’s request and it is expected to run in an upcoming issue. As submitted, we described the success of taking an editorial rather than an advertising approach to special events. We cited the success we have had with the American Star Exhibition, Mel Fisher’s Treasures of the Atocha, the Empress Caroline, Ilya Abelsky’s Eggstravaganza Shows and the exhibitions of Gary Bowersox and his sparkling colored Gems of Central Asia Exhibition.

FRENCH “FRIED” – It seems that many of our readers shared my feelings toward the French because of their actions or lack there of at the United Nations.
A sampling:
I speak fluent French, lived there for a year of college and studied at the Sorbonne, fell in love with French wine, art and architecture and wrote my college thesis on the native literature of French Colonized Africa.
I also feel strongly that our President is a poor international negotiator. He makes things personal and instigates friction when co-operation is dearly needed.
And with all of this said, I completely agree with your stance on the French. Sometime last November I began my ban on French wine and refusal to speak a word of French. They will forever suffer from a Charles DeGaulle complex. While I do feel that our President's behavior with regard to Hussein
has been that of a school yard bully, I also feel that the French relish any opportunity to denounce us internationally. Twenty, thirty or forty years from now, it could easily been the arrogance of the French to ruin the EU alliance which grows so swiftly now.
The negotiations of today should be laid out not only to protect our immediate interests but to protect our future interests as well. The US will not be the lone super-power for very long. Every EU nation has forgone their sovereignty more than the US ever predicted to form one European Union. China, India and others that I have overlooked will soon weigh in on the international order. I believe it to be a good investment in our future foreign relations to lay down our self-made cowboy hats and insist that the United Nations step up to the plate.
Hussein is a threat to our national safety. Terrorist organizations could reach unparalleled success under his tutelage and financial support.
No more French wine in this house!

My good friend and retired Navy Commander Earl Greathouse added from Hawaii:
Hey Larry, how can be so cruel to the French. You know they have always been there when they needed us. I never really liked French wine.
And, Steve Gonzales up in Cedar Park, Texas, put in his two bucks worth:
Lube,
Gotta agree with you on the arrogant Frogs with their pompous ass superiority complex.
Here’s my suggestion:
When talking with an arrogant Frenchman, ask a simple question: “Do you speak German?”
If the answer is, “No,” then tell him, “You’re welcome.”
Perhaps the best comment I heard on David Letterman’s show. When a visiting comic said he wanted to learn French so he could tell them to kiss America’s ass in their own language!

THREE IN A ROW – Gary Bowersox, America’s leading explorer of Afghanistan and its leading expert on the hidden yet spectacular gems from Central Asia, hit Austin for an exhibition of his collection of 20,000 some gems at Copeland’s Jewelers. We arranged three Austin television appearances for Gary, plus a talk to business executives at the National Business Exchange. Gary followed up his Austin media success with a couple of TV appearances in Little Rock on the way to Mobile. If you want know about Gary’s shows, contact us or go to his web site: www. FIESTA SETS RECORD – Fiesta De Los Ninos confirmed its position as one of America’s most successful corporate charitable campaigns when it set a record for 2003. The event, whose major sponsor is Flint Hills Resources, formerly known as Koch Petroleum Company, raised more than $250,000 for the pediatric cardiology programs at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. Fiesta had more than 20 individual media “hits” during the six days leading up to the February 21 event headlined by Country star Jerry Jeff Walker.

MORE SUCCESS FOR THE EGG MAN – Nothing seems to be able to stop Ilya Abelsky, known affectionately in the jewelry industry as the “Egg Man.” Ilya did a three day exhibition in Bloomington, IN, better known as the home of Indiana University. He had the misfortune of being booked by us on a noon program the same time that Secretary of State Colin Powell had a length press conference. The station, however, taped Ilya and ran a lengthy interview with him the following day. The result was excellent expanded coverage than we would have received from the original scheduled interview – one of two noon TV show appearances that we arranged for our client and friend, Ilya.

DR. CARTER’S ROCK – National Jeweler has revealed to us the engagement ring that Dr. Carter has for nurse Abby on the hit NBC Show, “ER.” It’s a Royal Oval from M. Fabeikant & Sons and is valued at more than $20,000, The ring has a 2-carat center stone, surrounded by .12 carats of pave diamonds in a hand engraved platinum setting. The magazine said the ring was chosen because it resembles the rings that Carter’s wealthy family might have owned in the early part of the 20th Century.

TV SPOT OF THE MONTH – My kudos continually go to Sprint for their creative and effective television campaign for their cell phones. The latest hit they produced is the Dachsund vs Oxen commercial. The shot of the little dogs in a wagon’s yoke is priceless, as is the “stampede” closer.

PR TIP OF THE MONTH – Most PR professionals who cut their eye teeth at Carl Byoir & Associates, know about the “Square Basketball” principal. The “school solution” to the client is wrong issue is a Square Basketball.
In other words, when the client tells you to produce a Square Basketball, your reply should be that a Square Basketball can’t be dribbled, is hard to pass and won’t go through the hoop.
If you’ve made this clear to the client and he insists that he wants a Square Basketball, your only reply is, “We’ll build you the best square basketball in the world!”
